Do you have excessive sweating?
Does this sound like you?
I sweat so much from my underarms…
It is so embarrassing especially at work and in social situations. And it doesn’t even have to be that hot. I have taken to hiding my condition with dark clothes.
My hands are perpetually wet…
It’s certainly worse with stress. Sometimes, it is beyond a joke and I cannot handle things, paper etc. The worst thing is not being able to shake someone’s hand without fearing the worst.
I generally tend not to mention this to people…
Over time, I have learnt to deal with it. But I wonder what it is like to be normal, or
I did tell my doctor…
Stronger antiperspirants only did so much. A few blood tests later and I was told there was not much that could be done.
We all sweat to maintain our body temperature. This is especially so in warm or hot conditions. However some people sweat excessively (called hyperhidrosis) despite the conditions.
At this point, you should know that you are not alone. Some studies suggest that 1 in 35 people have a focal sweating disorder and about half of these have the problem just in their underarm region. One in 5-6 of these people will require more than strong antiperspirants. That is 1 in 200 members of the public. We don’t really understand why this problem exists but we do know it runs in families, and that it is caused by the nervous system. Many sufferers rate it as worse for quality of life than many chronic medical disorders. Very occasionally, it can be due to a serious medical disorder so a proper medical consultation is recommended.
